Why does smoke smell stronger at night?
Because the air goes still. On a clear night the ground cools, the air near it stops mixing upward, and smoke stays in a thin layer at nose height. A joint that fades at about 35 feet on a sunny afternoon can reach about 100 feet on a clear, still night, roughly three times as far.
It isn't your imagination, and it isn't the cold. Smoke smells stronger at night because of what the air is doing. During the day the air is constantly churning, and at night it settles. That one change can triple how far smoke smell travels.
Day vs night, in feet
These distances come from Driftline's drift model for open ground. "Reach" is how far downwind someone would likely catch whiffs now and then.
| Conditions | One joint | One cigarette |
|---|---|---|
| Sunny afternoon, 5 mph | 35 ft | 20 ft |
| Cloudy day, 10 mph | 45 ft | 25 ft |
| Cloudy night, 8 mph | 55 ft | 30 ft |
| Clear night, light wind (4 mph) | 105 ft | 60 ft |
| Clear night, nearly calm | 70–80 ft | 35–45 ft |
What happens to the air at night
On a sunny day the ground heats the air just above it. Warm air rises, cooler air sinks to replace it, and the air near the ground churns all day. Smoke gets carried upward and thinned out fast.
After sunset the ground cools quickly, especially under a clear sky. It chills the air touching it, and that cold, heavy air settles under warmer air above. This is called a temperature inversion. Nothing pushes the smoke upward anymore, so it stays in a low, concentrated ribbon at about the height of people's noses and slides along with the breeze.
Why clouds make a difference
Clouds act like a blanket. At night they keep the ground from cooling much, so the air doesn't settle as hard. During the day they block the sun, so the air doesn't churn as hard. That's why cloudy weather falls in between: smoke travels farther than on a sunny afternoon, but not as far as on a clear night.
Why a dead-calm night isn't the farthest
A light, steady breeze of a few miles per hour carries the smell farthest in one direction. When the air is nearly calm, the smell doesn't get pushed anywhere in particular. It pools around you and drifts back and forth, so it covers a shorter distance in any one direction, but it hangs around longer. See how long weed smell lasts.
Is it the same for campfire and wildfire smoke?
Yes, it's the same air at work. Campfire, fireplace and wildfire smoke all settle near the ground on clear, calm nights, and they often collect in valleys and low spots. That's why a neighborhood can smell of wood smoke after dark even when the fire is far away.
In town vs open ground
Buildings and pavement soak up heat during the day and give it back at night. Walls and roofs also stir the wind. So in a neighborhood the night effect is weaker than in an open field. For one joint on a clear night, the reach is closer to 50 to 90 feet among houses and in the city.
Common questions
Does cold air make smoke smell travel farther?
Not by itself. It's the stillness, not the temperature. A cold, windy, cloudy night mixes the air well, and smoke fades about as fast as on a cloudy day.
Why can I only smell my neighbor's smoke at night?
During the day their smoke gets mixed upward and thinned out before it reaches you. At night it stays low and concentrated, so the same smoke reaches your yard or window. See can neighbors smell weed.
When does the air start mixing again?
In the morning. Once the sun starts warming the ground, the night layer breaks up, usually within an hour or two after sunrise on a clear day.
Does cigarette smoke also smell stronger at night?
Yes. The effect is the same for any smoke. A cigarette carries about 15 to 30 feet on a typical day and about 30 to 75 feet on a clear, still night. See how far cigarette smoke travels.
How sure are these numbers?
The day-and-night pattern is well established. It's the basis of the stability classes used in air pollution modeling. The exact distances are estimates: nobody has published a controlled study of how far people can smell smoke outdoors, so treat them as a guide, not a guarantee.
