Finding your location and weather…
The zone comes from a meandering plume model, a version of the method used for industrial odor studies. Smoke leaves you as a narrow ribbon that swings around with the wind. The shading shows where the smell is strongest, and the dashed line marks how far whiffs are likely to reach. It uses live wind, gusts, sunshine and nearby buildings from OpenStreetMap to judge how fast the smoke spreads, and in calm air it allows for the light eddies that are always there. It's tuned so one cigarette in a light daytime breeze gives whiffs at roughly 15 to 25 ft. Nobody has measured exactly how far people can smell smoke outdoors, so treat the zone as an estimate.
