How long does weed smell last?
Outside, the smell of a joint usually clears within about a minute of the last puff in a breeze, and in 1 to 2 minutes on a calm, clear night. Indoors it lasts far longer: a few hours in a closed room, and on clothes, hair and couches it can last until they're washed.
Smell lasts as long as the air holding it stays put. Outside, the wind carries it away and mixes it into a huge amount of fresh air, so it's gone fast. Indoors, the same smoke is trapped in one room's worth of air and soaks into anything soft, so it hangs around for hours.
How long does weed smell last outside?
Not long. Once you stop, the last puff drifts downwind and thins out. These times come from Driftline's drift model and are for one joint in open air. They count from the last puff until the smell has passed out of the zone where people could notice it.
| Conditions | Smell clears in |
|---|---|
| Sunny, 10 mph breeze | under 10 sec |
| Sunny, light breeze (5 mph) | 10–15 sec |
| Cloudy night, 8 mph | about 10 sec |
| Clear night, light wind (4 mph) | 30–45 sec |
| Clear night, nearly calm (1 to 2 mph) | 1–2 min |
Sheltered spots hold smell longer. In a courtyard, a narrow side yard, under a covered porch or on a balcony with walls on three sides, the air barely moves, and the smell can hang around for several minutes.
How long does weed smell last in a room?
Usually a few hours in a closed room, and it can be faint but noticeable the next day. Smoke particles and the oily, strong-smelling compounds in cannabis (terpenes) settle onto walls, carpet, curtains, bedding and furniture, and then slowly give the smell back off. That's why a room can smell fine at first and then stale later.
- Window open with a fan blowing out: the air itself clears in well under an hour.
- Closed room: a few hours for the air, longer for soft surfaces.
- Regular smoking in the same room: the smell builds up in fabric and paint and can linger for days or weeks.
These are rough guides from how indoor air and smoke residue usually behave, not measurements.
How long does weed smell stay in a car?
Longer than in a room. A car is a tiny space packed with fabric, so the smell soaks in fast. With the windows up, the air can smell for hours, and the seats and headliner can hold a faint smell for days. Driving with the windows down clears the air quickly, but not the upholstery.
How long does weed smell last on clothes and hair?
Until they're washed, in most cases. Fabric and hair trap smoke particles well, and you stop noticing the smell on yourself long before other people do. Smoke smell on skin and hands fades within a few hours, or right away with soap.
Does a weed pen smell last as long?
No. Vapor has no burnt-plant smell and doesn't leave much residue, so it usually fades within a minute or so even indoors. See can you smell a weed pen for more.
How to make the smell clear faster
- Outside: pick a spot where the wind blows away from doors, windows and people. Open ground clears much faster than a sheltered nook.
- Indoors: make a cross breeze. Open two windows on different sides, and point a fan out of one of them.
- Fabric: wash clothes and bedding. Air fresheners and candles cover the smell for a while, but they don't remove it.
Common questions
Why does weed smell linger longer at night?
On clear, calm nights the air near the ground goes still, so smoke stays low and moves slowly. It takes longer to blow away and it travels farther before it fades. See why smoke smells stronger at night.
Can you smell weed the next day?
Outside, no. The smell is gone within minutes. Indoors, often yes: after heavy smoking a closed room, a car or a couch can still smell faintly the next day.
Does air freshener get rid of weed smell?
No, it covers it for a while. Fresh air is what actually removes the smell, and washing is what removes it from fabric.
How long does weed smell last on your breath?
Usually an hour or two, less after brushing your teeth, drinking water or eating.
How sure are these numbers?
The outdoor times come from a standard odor drift model, the same one that draws Driftline's map, so treat them as estimates. Nobody has published a controlled study of how long cannabis smell lasts outdoors or indoors. The indoor numbers are rough guides based on how smoke residue usually behaves.
