How far can you smell weed smoke outside?

For one joint, the smell usually carries about 25 to 50 feet downwind during the day, and up to about 100 feet or more on a clear, still night. Upwind and off to the sides it usually fades within about 10 feet.

Wind 5 mph ≈ 40 ft Check your smoke zone

The distance depends far more on the weather than on the weed. The wind sets the direction, and the time of day and the clouds decide how quickly the smoke mixes into the air and fades. That's why the same joint can be barely noticeable 20 feet away one afternoon and catch someone's nose across a parking lot that night.

How far weed smell travels, by weather

These come from Driftline's drift model, a meandering plume model of the kind used to study odors from farms and factories. "Reach" is how far someone downwind would likely catch whiffs now and then.

ConditionsReach downwind
Sunny afternoon, light breeze (5 mph)35–45 ft
Sunny, 10 mph breeze25–30 ft
Cloudy day, 10 mph35–50 ft
Windy, 20 mph25–35 ft
Cloudy night, 8 mph40–55 ft
Clear night, light wind (3 to 6 mph)100–135 ft
Clear night, nearly calm (spreads more evenly around you)55–70 ft

The longer numbers are for open ground like a yard or a park. Among houses and in the city, buildings slow and stir the wind, and on clear nights the reach is closer to 50 to 90 feet. Two or three people smoking together push every number out further.

Does weed smell travel farther at night?

On a sunny day the ground heats the air above it, and that warm air rises and churns. Smoke gets mixed upward and thinned out fast. On a clear night the ground cools, the air near it goes still, and smoke stays in a low, concentrated ribbon that slides along with the breeze. That ribbon can carry the smell two to three times as far as on a sunny afternoon. Clouds keep the air mixing more evenly day and night, so cloudy weather sits in between. More on why smoke smells stronger at night.

Does wind make it travel farther?

Wind decides where the smell goes, but more wind doesn't mean more distance. A gentle, steady breeze carries the smell farthest in one direction. A strong wind spreads it into much more air, so it fades sooner, although short whiffs can still reach someone. In nearly calm air the smell doesn't go as far in any one direction, but it pools around you and drifts unpredictably.

Wind is named for where it comes from. A north wind blows smoke to the south. If you stand upwind of someone, they're unlikely to smell much at all.

Does weed smell carry farther than cigarettes?

Usually, yes. Cannabis smoke carries strong-smelling compounds called terpenes, and most people notice it more readily than tobacco. Driftline treats one joint as roughly three cigarettes' worth of smell, which works out to about 1.5 to 2 times the reach. See how far cigarette smoke travels for the tobacco numbers.

Common questions

How long does weed smell last outside?

In open air the smell usually clears within a minute or two after the joint goes out, faster in a breeze. In still air, in a courtyard or under a covered porch, it hangs around noticeably longer. On clothes, hair and fabric it can last for hours. More in how long weed smell lasts.

Does cold weather make weed smell less?

Not really. Cold, clear nights are when the air near the ground is stillest, so the smell often carries farther, not less. Wind and clouds matter much more than temperature.

Does a weed vape smell as much as a joint?

Usually less. Vapor has none of the burnt-plant smell, so it is fainter and fades faster. It isn't odorless, though, and someone close by and downwind can still notice it. See can you smell a weed pen.

Which way will the smell go?

The way the wind is blowing to. Wind is named for where it comes from, so a north wind carries the smell south. Driftline shows the wind and the smell zone for where you are.

How sure are these numbers?

Not very, and it's worth being honest about that. Scientists have measured how far tobacco smoke particles travel outdoors (they dropped to background levels about 13 feet from one cigarette in Stanford's studies), but nobody has published a controlled study of how far people can smell cannabis smoke outdoors. A nose picks up odor at levels far below what particle meters detect, so the smell zone is bigger than the particle zone. Driftline's numbers are an educated estimate from a standard drift model, not a guarantee.
